February Drabble Challenge: Undone

Horror PromptsGillian Church has created 28 single-word prompts and challenged writers to write a horror drabble for each. A drabble is a story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less (not counting the title).

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Undone

The Submission:
Years of planning … all undone by a single fighter!

One small gap in our defences, one lucky shot, and everything has fallen apart.

Well … so be it! If I’m to go down, I’ll take their whole damned world with me!

It won’t take much; it’s a simple case of overloading the gravity drive, inputting a collision course with that blue hellhole, and letting physics take care of the rest.

Klaxons blared around me as the ship lumbered to fulfil my final command.

A flickering, flaming aura engulfed the ship as we breeched the atmosphere.

“Long live the Empire!”

I wish I’d never been to that fuckin’ forest! Ate that fuckin’ ‘shroom!

Fuckin’ Jonesy and his bright ideas!

Mark went last night; he tried to pass it on, but it didn’t take.

Jonesy’ll probably be okay; he’s got Ellen an’ she’s bound’t put out!

I can feel it eatin’ away at me; my fuckin’ eyes were bleedin’ this mornin’!

I gotta pass it on… there’s gotta be someone!

That chick two floors down,… she’s always had a thing for me.

Luckily, it’s Valentine’s Day so she won’t ask questions but I have to hurry! I’ve wasted too much time.

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Choking

The Submission:
They were such a nice couple; they were always so polite, and I didn’t think twice of popping over to ask to borrow a tin opener.

George kept saying he’d fix ours, but it finally bit the dust and I needed it for my recipes.

They invited me in, even treated me to a cup of tea and a digestive; but when I saw the time and had to excuse myself, he leapt on me with such ferocity!

I had no hope of fighting back. I choked beneath his grip as she cackled behind him, and the world turned to–

February Drabble Challenge: Fever

Horror PromptsGillian Church has created 28 single-word prompts and challenged writers to write a horror drabble for each. A drabble is a story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less (not counting the title).

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Fever

The Submission:
“And how’s little Daisy’s fever? Is she still in bed?”

I half-choked on my tea; Dennis glared at me from across the table. “She’s fine,” he barked a little too harshly.

“I haven’t seen her in days; maybe I should go check on her?”

“No! Don’t, please!” I grabbed my mother’s wrist as she rose from the table.

“Whatever’s the matter, dear? I just want to see my granddaughter.”

Mother shook me off and headed upstairs. I moved to stop her but Dennis shook his head, a stern look in his eyes.

I drank my tea as the screaming started.

February Drabble Challenge: Blistered

Horror PromptsGillian Church has created 28 single-word prompts and challenged writers to write a horror drabble for each. A drabble is a story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less (not counting the title).

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Blistered

The Submission:
“F’r fuck’s sake, you gotta let me in!” Ned pounded on the door, but I wouldn’t budge.

“No!” I screamed, tears streaming in my eyes. “I can’t risk it!”

I peered through the porthole in the door and saw Ned slamming his fist on it over and over as our neighbours ran screaming behind him. His face was red, puffy, and oozing with weeping, rash-like blisters. As he hollered and cursed, his eyeball trickled from its socket.

“Who’s that?” my wife asked.

“It’s Ned; he’s infected! We’ve gotta…”

I turned and beheld the blistered faces of my wife and children.

February Drabble Challenge: Yarn

Horror PromptsGillian Church has created 28 single-word prompts and challenged writers to write a horror drabble for each. A drabble is a story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less (not counting the title).

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Yarn

The Submission:
“What’s that he’s got?” Sylvie asked.

“Aw, it’s just a bit of your yarn. He likes to play with it,” Tony answered, barely glancing up from his newspaper.

Crispy went wild on the rug, bopping and flailing at his target.

“I don’t have any pink yarn…” Sylvie mused, bending down for a closer look.

Crispy looked up, eyes wide; the yarn hanging from his grinning mouth. Sylvie’s blood ran cold as a bloody, mewling rat-like lizard slipped from Crispy’s mouth and flailed on the rug.

Sylvie’s disgust turned to horror as Crispy’s eyes darkened and he launched himself at her.

Horror PromptsGillian Church has created 28 single-word prompts and challenged writers to write a horror drabble for each. A drabble is a story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less (not counting the title).

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Balloon

The Submission:
When Peter told me what that little shit Brody had done, my blood boiled. He’s a sweet, kind-hearted little boy who enjoys his drawing and doesn’t have a bad bone in his body so for that little shit to pick on him just because he’s a little small for his age…!

I knew Brody liked to play down by the old bridge. I wasn’t thinking; I just went there.

When Brody came along, picking his nose, a simple call and the allure of the balloon drew him closer.

He didn’t see the knife until it was stuck in his throat.

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Kiss

The Submission:
The last thing I expect was Corey Trainor to show up outside my dorm room, but I wasn’t gonna complain!

He pushed past me, babbling something about having waited too long.

Like I cared! Corey was a dream! And here he was, in all his six-foot, shaggy-haired glory!

He grabbed me roughly and pulled me in for a kiss. I felt butterflies in my stomach; my lips were tingling!

Suddenly, Corey withered and decayed before my eyes; his skin turned to ash and he screamed a silent, agonised wail as he crumpled to dust.

“Too long! I waited too long!”

The Prompt:
Compressed

The Submission:
I hated it down there. It was dark and dank and full of rats and creepy-crawlies, but the doctor made the rules.

“My specimens won’t take care of themselves,” he’d explained as he worked on his latest subject. “Now go dispose of that”.

The doctor kept the machine down there in the musty dark. It was rusted and stained with untold viscera.

I loaded the latest batch into the rancid contraption and pulled the lever. As the fleshy meat that had once been humans was squashed and compressed, I wondered when I would be fed to the machine so callously.

February Drabble Challenge: Honeymoon

Horror PromptsGillian Church has created 28 single-word prompts and challenged writers to write a horror drabble for each. A drabble is a story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less (not counting the title).

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Honeymoon

The Submission:
She wanted everything to be “perfect”, so I booked the bridal suite and every pamper session the hotel offered.

Of course, the first thing she did was criticise. The view wasn’t right, the bed sheets were slightly rumpled, there weren’t enough towels.

“Yes, dear,” I smiled and nodded. “Whatever you say, dear”.

I wasn’t mad. How could I be?

I drew her bath with enthusiasm and, when she stepped in, she didn’t even notice her camomile infusion was laced with sulphuric acid until I was holding her head under the bubbles.

Her choking screams were worth the burns I suffered.
