March Drabble Challenge: Reveal

Horror PromptsGillian Church is hosting another horror drabble challenge: 31 prompts for 31 creepy tales throughout March. This time, we can decide on the length of the piece but I’m sticking to the 100-word default.

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Reveal

The Submission:
Eric had been trembling when Sherry finally brought him to her dorm after weeks of going steady and making him wait.

They’d been going steady for a few weeks now, but she’d teased him by saying she wasn’t ready to go all the way yet, and now it was finally happening.

He sat on the edge of her bed as she lifted her dress over her head and was startled at the reveal of her naked body.

Boils pulsated across her creamy-white skin; some leaked pus as she ran her hands over them, licking her fingers at the taste.

“What’s wrong, babe?” she purred, her face splitting at the jaw. “Don’t you want me?”

Weekly Writing Prompt: 30/03/2022

Gillian Church posts Writing Prompts every week on her Horror Prompts Instagram account and I like to take part with a few snippets and pieces of flash fiction.

The Prompt:
Unknown caller: You say you’ve found the perfect item to donate to the Museum of Oddities and Artefacts. Tell me more…

The Submission:
“Sorry, who is this?” Jameson asked, removing his pipe from his lips.

“Oh, this is Mr. Scratch from the Museum of Oddities and Artefacts.  Perhaps you’ve heard of us?”

“No?” Jameson said, puzzled. “I can’t say that I have.”

“I saw your listing on Facebook; that’s quite the intriguing trinket you have in your possession.”

Jameson glanced over at the dining table from his easy chair; the amphora had probably once been a shining black/gold but had been sun-bleached over the centuries. The remaining handle was chipped and brittle to the touch and the images and symbols that had once adorned the exterior was faded.

“May as I ask where you acquired it?”

“Well…” Jameson sighed. “That’s a…long story…”

“Let me be frank, Mr. Wolfe. My museum is very eager to display this piece, and we’re willing to offer you fair compensation for it.”

Jameson stared at the amphora, sweat dripping down his brow, reliving the blinding, burning light that had burst from the vase upon first removing its lid. Grace, Roberts, Donald…all burnt to charred, smouldering skeletons, with only him left standing.

I shall give you life! the demonic smoke-demon had cooed, swirling around his head, drifting up his nostrils. Life…and health…their lives for yours…

A wisp of mist wafted from the cracks in the amphora and Jameson gulped back a shaking breath. “I…I’m sorry…it’s….it’s not for sale…”

The Prompt:
Bulb

The Submission:
The naked bulb smashed in the fracas, plunging the dank basement into darkness.

Norris grabbed at me, heaving and gnashing, and I struggled to break free from his course grip.

“We don’t have time for this!” Grey shouted.

“Fuck you!” Norris barked and shoved me.

My arms pinwheeled out and I landed hard on my ass in a puddle. Suddenly light flooded the basement as the door burst open and the moaning, shambling ghouls spilled down the stairs.

“Oh fuck!” Grey screamed as one of the writhing corpses stroked at his calf.

Norris lift his crowbar as they swarmed him.

The Prompt:
Dough

The Submission:
Mrs. Sanders danced as she worked in the kitchen. She kneaded the dough, spreading it into a perfect base ready to be filled with meat, potatoes, and seasonings and cooked to perfection in her large, cast iron oven.

She took pride in her meat pies, which were the most popular seller in her bakery. And why not? Her meat was as fresh as you could want, and locally sourced. She danced her way to the fridge to grab a tray of Father Brisco’s meat, freshly tenderised and cut, and happily dropped the chunks of the nosey priest to the dough.

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Bleed

The Submission:
By rights, I shouldn’t even be out here in the goddamn woods searching for some kid too stupid to know better.

A blur of motion caught my eye; I whirled around, frantically shining my torch across the thick trees, but visibility was almost impossible because of the pouring rain and I didn’t see the wolf until it was leaping at me.

Hot breath filled my nostrils as I beat at the wolf. I screamed as gleaming teeth clamped around my forearm and tore at my flesh, splashing gore in my eyes as it bit at my throat and gorged itself.

The Prompt:
Hacker

The Submission:
The hacker interrupted the feed, throwing the studio into chaos. The monitors glitched and the newscasters frantically looked to their bewildered producers for answers.

“You ignored my warnings,” came the distorted voice as technicians tried to restore the feed.

“For that, there must be a price paid. By now, entire shipments of bottle water laced with anthrax have made it to shelves for your widespread consumption,” the anchor-man’s eyes bulged as he stared at the half-empty bottle on his news desk.

“I never wanted this. You drove me to it by ignoring my demands. Perhaps now you’ll take me seriously.”

Delusion

The Submission:
All too late, he realised the full extent of his mindless delusion.

Sadly, it didn’t come in time to save Mary, whose broken body he held cradled in his trembling arms.

Hubris flowed through him as he swept his eyes across the ravaged laboratory. Sparks few all around; blood was splattered everywhere, and years of research were literally going up in flames.

The creature turned and glared its creator, blood and saliva dripping from its jowls. It gave a low growl and padded slowly, measuring its prey, before lunging ahead, mane ablaze, teeth bared, and feasting upon the doctor’s flesh.

Can you do it?

The Prompt:
Stitches

The Submission:
The doctors told me that my arm would itch following the injury, especially after my stitches came out, but the irritation was almost unbearable!

I constantly scratched at the twisted scar, to the point where I had to wrap it in a bandage to keep from splitting the wound open.

I awoke late one night unable to take it any longer. I grabbed a pair of scissors and tore at the flesh, ripping it open and spilling juicy, bloody beetles and writhing worms to the floor.

My stomach roiled. I opened tried to scream and more burst from my throat.

March Drabble Challenge: Tidy

The Prompt:
Tidy

The Submission:
Finally given an afternoon to herself, Donna set to work catching up on her menial household chores. After changing the bed sheets, she quickly vacuumed and made the lounge nice and tidy, which always calmed her nerves.

Donna went down to the basement to pull out her washing load and was startled by a rattling from the cage in the corner. She wandered over and rolled her eyes. Doug’s water bowl was empty, and he was rattling the cage bars like a child.

Donna lashed her horsewhip over his knuckles. She wasn’t going to let him ruin her perfect day.

Weekly Writing Prompt: 23/03/2022

Gillian Church posts Writing Prompts every week on her Horror Prompts Instagram account and I like to take part with a few snippets and pieces of flash fiction.

The Prompt:
I’m so excited to introduce you to my family! Before the dinner, though, I have to tell you something…

The Submission:
The drive down was uneventful, for a change. Mary-Ann didn’t mind; even if they got stuck in traffic, she generally just slept the whole way or annoyed Bill by talking on the phone while he was trying to keep his nerves calm with some heavy rock.

“I should warn you, Mare,” he said suddenly, spooking her attention from a bird of prey hovering over a field. “The rest of my family aren’t like my parents.”

Mary-Ann raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah? How so?”

Bill shifted a little in the driver’s seat. “They have some…well, eccentricities.”

“What are they, Methodists?”

Bill smirked. “No, not at all. They kind of despise all religion.”

Mary-Anne shrugged, wincing at a slight pain in her belly and a rush of nausea; she had been raised by strict Jehovah’s Witness parents and didn’t really have much love for religion since ostracising herself from them. “As long as they’re not planning on nailing me to an alter and sacrificing me to a goat, I’m happy.”

Bill bared a laugh and turned to her. “And…if they are?”

Mary-Ann giggled. “Hey, I’m pregnant, remember?”

Bill nodded. “Yes, that’s what makes you a perfect candidate.”

Mary-Ann’s laughter gave way to confusion. “Wait…what?”

“Sure!” Bill beamed as he took the exit. “After all, we want our Saviour to be a healthy child.”

Mary-Ann frowned, hugging her belly. “Bill, that’s not funny.”

Bill turned towards her, a dark glint in his eye. “Cleansing the world never is.”
